Items to Keep Your Car Organized

Literary Soon-to-Reads. Stuff on my short list, 2004 (annotated)
General Car Reviews
Unlike this photo , this photo contains the books I’ll actually get around to reading. I admit rearranging the shelf slightly for the sake of the photo (mainly to make the covers visible), but it’s otherwise in its natural habitat. If you are admiring this stack, you probably should read Scott Esposito’s how to tell if you own too many books . For kicks, you might want to compare the contents of this shelf with the books I’ve actually managed to finish.

We are often pretty sensitive about the appearance of our car, as a person’s car is implicitly linked to his social status and reputation. Everyone likes stylish, stunning, and organized vehicles. Although, we can spend luxuriously on the style and looks of our vehicles, and make them truly captivating, but its tidiness requires some conscious efforts from our part.

We can keep our vehicle clean and organized by taking some small yet valuable measures. We generally leave everything to mechanics and service stations, with a presumption that these would take good care of our vehicles. Despite, all their hard work, we often feel unsatisfied with our vehicles’ looks as well as performance.

This happens largely due to our carelessness in proper maintenance of vehicles. A little effort from our part can delay our vehicle’s frequent visits to service stations, and thereby helps in increasing its life remarkably. In order to keep your car organized and tidy, just add few important things in it, these are:

• Trash Bag – Make sure that your car must have a small trash-bag in it. This will help you in gathering all the litter within your vehicle, and ultimately disposing off to a suitable place. Train your kids about the use of trash bags, and instruct them to put all the garbage, empty packets and bottles, wrappers, etc, into the trash bag. Don’t heap the litter for long and empty the trash-bag, wherever you find trash bins.

• Document Folder – Always keep an optimum sized folder or bag in your car, to keep all your important documents and papers at one place. This will save you from the embarrassment, when the traffic official stops you for routine checking. Always place this bag in the glove compartment of your car; this will make all these documents readily available, when required.

• Multi-purpose Bags- In addition to documents and paper, the interior of our cars are often found to be cluttered with several things, such as- CDs and DVDs, maps, books, and other such objects. Make sure that these objects aren’t unnecessarily cluttering your car’s interior, and arrange them properly into a suitably designed bag. These articles, if misplaced, diminish the interior appearance of your car significantly.

• Waxing and Polishing Material- Always keep appropriate polishing and waxing material into your car. This will help in dealing with minor scratches and marks within your car’s interior.

• Backseat Organizer – Install a good backseat organizer in your car, which would help your kids in placing their toys, coloring books, water bottles, umbrella, and other such things. This will take care of the entire belongings of your family, and thereby help you in keeping your car clean and organized.

Besides all these items, you must vacuum clean your vehicle fortnightly. Clean out the dirt from the covers and other parts of your vehicle’s interior. Also keep doors of all the compartments properly fitted to the body of the car, so that none of the material would come out of it.

Honey, if you get this message, come rescue me! I’m trapped inside this subway car!
General Car Reviews
The photo makes it look as if this woman is about to get her leg stuck in the closing subway-car doors. But in fact, she was sitting on the subway seat on the far side of the car, so her legs were perfectly safe…

Note: this photo was published in an undated (Jan 18, 2011) Everyblock NYC zipcodes blog titled "10023."

****************************************

This is a continuation of a series of subway photos that I began in the spring of 2009, and which you can find here. I created another Flickr set here in 2010, with photos from IRT subway stations at 96th Street, 42nd Street (Times Square), and Christopher Street/Sheridan Square (in Greenwich Village). The photos in this set were taken at the 72nd Street IRT station.

********************************************

Note: I chose this photo as my "photo of the day," among the photos uploaded on Jan 18, 2010. It illustrates something that is both a good thing and a bad thing about the "process" of photographing something that eventually gets shown to people other than the photographer — i.e., the photographer himself inevitably knows much more about what was going on at the instant the photograph was taken (and possibly during the several minutes before and after that instant), and therefore tends to ascribe more "meaning" to the photograph than the viewer could possible achieve on his own.

In this case, it something fairly simple: I saw the woman with her cellphone sitting on the subway seat, while the train was stopped in the station, and the doors were wide open. Because of her pose, and the look of concentration on her face, I thought she would make a good photo, and I began to aim my camera in her direction — just as the subway doors began to close. So I took the photo more hurriedly than I would normally have done, hoping that I might be lucky enough to capture her image before the doors were completely closed. The result was a happy bit of serendipity: the shutter clicked (electronically speaking; god only knows what really goes on in these digital cameras) just as the shutters tightly framed her head and hands. A split second later, the doors were closed, and the train was starting to move on toward its next stop. I wasn’t sure what I had gotten until I uploaded all of the photos to my computer (yes, I could have reviewed the image on my camera screen, but I had already moved on to the next photographic opportunity), at which point I said to myself, "Hah! I got you!"

The viewers, of course, have none of this experience, none of the emotions that preceded or accompanied the actual taking of the picture. On the other hand, they are free to experience their own emotions, and to conjure up whatever "story" their imaginations might concoct about the circumstances before, during, and after the instant when the photo was taken. As I have learned by asking people what they thought was going on at the moment such a photo was taken, sometimes their imagination produces a "story" that’s even more interesting and memorable than what the photographer himself experienced; and sometimes they get nothing out of it at all. I suppose that’s just one of many reasons why photographers sometimes love photos they’ve taken, when everyone else just shrugs; and also why photographers are sometimes puzzled about photos they’ve taken and essentially ignored afterwards, while the public reacts with great enthusiasm. C’est la vie…

********************************

Over the years, I’ve seen various photos of the NYC subway "scene," usually in a relatively grim, dark, black-and-white format. But during a spring 2009 class on street photography at the NYC International Center of Photography (ICP), I saw lots and lots of terrific subway shots taken by my fellow classmates … so I was inspired to start taking some myself.

One of the reasons I rarely, if ever, took subway photos before 2009 is that virtually every such photo I ever saw was in black-and-white. I know that some people are fanatics about B/W photography as a medium; and I respect their choice. And I took quite a lot of B/W photographs of my own in the late 60s and early 70s, especially when I had my own little makeshift darkroom for printing my own photos.

But for most of the past 40 years, I’ve focused mostly on color photography. As for photos of subways, I don’t feel any need to make the scene look darker and grimier than it already is, by restricting it to B/W. Indeed, one of the things I find quite intriguing is that there is a lot of color in this environment, and it’s not too hard to give some warmth and liveliness to the scene…

To avoid disruption, and to avoid drawing attention to myself, I’m not using flash shots; but because of the relatively low level of lighting, I’m generally using an ISO setting of 3200 or 6400, depending on which camera I’m using. As a result, some of the shots are a little grainy – but it’s a compromise that I’m willing to make.

I occasionally use a small, compact "pocket" camera like the Canon G-12, but most of my photos have been taken with my somewhat large, bulky Nikon D300 and D700 DSLRs. If I’m photographing people on the other side of the tracks in a subway station, there’s no problem holding up the camera, composing the shot, and taking it in full view of everyone. But if I’m taking photos inside a subway car, I normally set the camera lens to a wide angle (18mm or 24mm) setting, point it in the general direction of the subject(s), and shoot without framing or composing.

What I find most interesting about the scenes photographed here is how isolated most people seem to be. Of course, there are sometimes couples, or families, or groups of school-children; but by far the most common scene is an individual standing alone, waiting for a train to arrive. He or she may be reading a book, or listening to music, or (occasionally) talking to someone on a cellphone; but often they just stare into space, lost in their own thoughts. Some look happy, some look sad; but the most common expression is a blank face and a vacant stare. It’s almost as if people go into a state of suspended animation when they descend underground into the subway — and they don’t resume their normal expression, behavior, and mannerisms until they emerge back above-ground at the end of their ride.

Anyway, this is what it looks like down underground … or at least, this is what it’s like in the stations I’ve visited and photographed so far. If I feel energetic enough in 2011, maybe I’ll try to photograph people in every subway station. It would be interesting to see what kind of variety can be seen…

The Volvo C30 Electric Car claims third place in top 2010 green cars. It stands out in the current market as it looks like a regular family car at first glance.

Driving the Volvo C30 Electric Car Driving the Volvo C30 Electric Car reminded me of the fact that when we have more electric cars on the road, I will have to remember the Green Cross Code again, and not just listen out for oncoming cars, but look as well. It is so quiet that when I turned on the engine I didn’t even know it was on!

It has no gears, but the motor’s power is there on tap and is delivered seamlessly. It runs from 0 to 60 mph in under 11 seconds and features a limited top speed of just over 80 mph.

It has a usable range of 93 miles between charges and the 24 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery can be charged in about eight hours via a 220-volt household outlet.

The Volvo C30 Electric Car as A Fleet Car
Expected to be on general sale in 2014, the results of prototype tests are very promising for the Volvo C30.

There are cars in the demo fleet which are equipped with advanced measuring instruments. This is so that Volvo Cars can build up additional information about how parameters such as driving habits and charging patterns can affect the battery and its lifetime in an electric car.

The C30 does not have the expected whine of an electric car, and with exhaust emissions which are zero, it would appear that the only downside is that its range is limited to 75-95 miles in normal driving conditions. Therefore for around town fleet use and trips that fall within the range this car is a promising fleet candidate.

It is expected to be priced at £22,500. If British Government support is forthcoming as we expect then, it could make an interesting choice.

Passengers and Luggage
The Volvo C30 Electric has the same safety, comfort and interior space as the standard Volvo C30. The only difference is that the C30 Electric is powered solely by electricity, so therefore it has absolutely no exhaust emissions on the road.

Security and Safety
The C30 electric has received plenty of care to ensure it is safe and highly capable of passing the high crash standards of Volvo. Also a lot of work has gone into ensuring that if the car is hit that the battery doesn’t go up in flames.

Volvo C30 Electric Car at a Glance
- Appearance like a regular family car
- Almost silent engine
- High Volvo safety standards
- 0 to 60 mph in under 11 seconds
- No gears but seamless motor power delivery
- Usable range of 93 miles
- 24 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery which can be charged in about eight hours via a 220-volt household outlet

The Top 10 Ways to Improve Flickr
General Car Reviews
Recently my friend Bill Storage asked a question in DeletemeUncensored titled "What’s Wrong With Flickr." The thread wasn’t meant to complain about Flickr but to talk about how Flickr could be improved if one were starting from scratch. I wrote a couple of long responses out to Bill in the thread, but thought that some of the ideas really belonged in a longer-form blog post.

Alot of people give me crap for criticizing Flickr. They ask me why I use Flickr if "hate" it so much. The fact of the matter is that I don’t hate Flickr at all. In fact I love Flickr (even if they don’t love me anymore). I spend more time on Flickr than any other site on the web. I think Flickr represents the best place on the web for a photographer to share photos today and I think as a whole that Flickr is one of the cultural gems of our lifetime. What’s more, a lot of the stuff on Flickr works really, really well and is really really great.

That said, I’ve always viewed criticism as a positive thing. As something that helps us improve and grow. Hopefully we learn from our critics and hopefully one can view suggestions as opportunities for improvement rather than simple mindless negativity. I blog alot about Flickr because I care about Flickr. I care about photography on the web. I care about the greater Flickr community and I want to see it get better and better. So don’t see this list as a bitch list about Flickr, rather see it as some honest ways that Flickr can improve.

1. Improve the process on how account and group deletions are handled. Flickr is increasingly becoming known as a place that deletes accounts willy nilly without warning. Flickr’s "Community Guidelines" are notoriously vague (you can be deleted without warning on Flickr for being "that guy" or if Flickr feels that you are "creepy.")

Many of my friends have had their entire accounts deleted for pretty minor offenses that are not specifically prohibited in more specific language in the TOS. In some cases photos with historical significance have been permanently lost. A while back Flickr nuked a group that I administered killing thousands of permanent threads. Thousands of threads by a group with thousands of members. Threads about cameras, workflows, photographic techniques, etc. Institutional knowledge stricken from the web forever.

Flickr really only should nuke accounts or groups as a matter of absolute last resort. They should try to work with their members (especially their long-term and paying members) if they find content that they object to. They should give members opportunities to take self-corrective action before just pulling the plug on their account. If they object to a single thread or a single image, they should just delete that image rather than nuking a user’s entire account.

When Flickr nukes a group or an account it says to a user, "I don’t respect you or your data." It creates an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty is bad for community.

At Flickr when they nuke your account it is also permanent and irrevocable. There is no undo button. Even if Flickr staff mistakenly deletes an account or if a hacker maliciously deletes your account, there is no getting that data back. It’s gone forever.

Flickr could probably very easily create a system where deleted accounts are simply turned completely private and inaccessible from the web without actually removing all of the data. They could then give a user an opportunity to fix whatever they have a problem with in order to get their account turned back on. This would be a far better way of managing community than Flickr does at present.

2. Create a more robust blocking tool. Today at Flickr when you block someone, all it means is that they can’t fave or comment on your photos. This is a very weak blocking system. If someone really wants to harass you blocking them does nothing. They can still comment on photos after you do so that their comments show up in your recent activity. They can still follow you around in groups and post things that you’re forced to look at etc. Especially with cheap throw away troll accounts this creates unnecessary conflict on the site.

A few years back, over at FriendFeed, they developed a far more robust blocking system. When you block someone on FriendFeed they become entirely invisible to you. Not only can they not comment in your threads, anyplace else they post on the site is made invisible to you. They are wiped off the planet as far as you are concerned.

Now this would accomplish a few things at flickr. First it would give users far more control over eliminating anything that they found personally offensive or negative on the site. You don’t like my paintings of nudes from a museum and don’t like seeing them when you search for the de Young Museum? Fine. Then block me and you never see any of my content again. You don’t like someone who uses language that you find offensive in a group post? Fine, block them as well.

Second though, this sort of tool would encourage more civil interaction between users. If a user creates a troll account and starts behaving badly. They are quickly blocked and become irrelevant. This encourages them not to troll creating a more positive experience for the rest of us.

Many of the personality clashes that occur on Flickr could be avoided if Flickr simply empowered the user to block more robustly.

3. SmartSets. Having to manually construct sets is an incredibly inefficient way to build and maintain your sets. That’s why I use Jeremy Brooks’ SuprSetr. It’s probably the best third-party app ever built for Flickr. Flickr should hire Jeremy in fact as he’s doing groundbreaking work here, but that’s another topic.

Flickr should consider building SuprSetr technology directly into their Organize section. Let users build sets by keywords. It makes it much easier for users to build and maintain their sets. If I build a Las Vegas set for instance. In the future every single photo of mine keyworded Las Vegas, automatically gets added to this set when I run SuprSetr. Very slick.

4. Better Group thread management. At present Flickr has a very strong and robust Groups section. Here users can create groups (and there are probably literally millions of groups at this point) and talk about whatever they want and post photos into a pool. Games have been created around groups. Businesses have set up groups. Local communities have created their own groups. There are niche groups about anything and everything — from graffiti in South Florida to a specific neon sign in San Jose. Some groups have more robust discussion threads than others, but all offer this feature.

One of the problems with group threads on Flickr though is that you are constantly losing track of conversations that you are having because you have to manually go to each and every group to check the threads. If I post something in a group, but then don’t remember to go back to that specific group and that specific thread, I have no way of knowing if someone has answered my question or commented after my thoughts or whatever.

Flickr should create a page that aggregates all of the group threads that you are participating in or have chosen to follow. This page would encompass all threads from all group in a nice aggregated section. This way if you posted a really important question in a group three months ago that someone has finally got around to answering, you will actually see it, the moment it is bumped to the top of your aggregator.

Flickr should also allow you to hide group threads. Both in your aggregator as well as in the more general group view. If I don’t care about the latest Pentax camera (because I’m a Canon 5D M2 owner) I should be able to mute that thread in the group and never see it again. This would also help decrease negative trolling and bumping of threads on the site as offensive threads could just be hidden by a user if they didn’t want to see it.

5. Kill explore and replace it with a recommendation system based on your contact’s/friends photos. Flickr blacklisted me from Explore a while back after I wrote a negative blog post about actions that someone on their community management team had taken. They capped my photos in it at 666 (cute huh?). But this isn’t why I don’t like Explore. There’s a whole thread called "So I Accidentally Clicked on Explore" in DMU devoted to crappy photos that end up in Explore. The problem with Explore is that it largely shows you photos that you are less interested in. Broad general popular photos of cliches. Sunsets and kittens as the saying goes.

If I choose to follow people on Flickr, I’m probably much more interested in their style of photography or them personally than I am images in Explore. Maybe I’m a graffiti writer and am most interested in graffiti photos. Maybe my thing is mannequins. Maybe I want to see photos of classic cars. Whatever. Instead of presenting the community what Flickr feels is the best of the whole community, show each member the best of their contacts each, day, week, month. I would be far more interested in the photos of people that I actually follow, like, know, etc. Maybe Aunt Edna’s photo of her dog will never hit Flickr’s explore. But it just might hit my own personalized explore and because I know Aunt Edna and she is my contact, it might be a much more rewarding experience for me to see than say another random dog shot from a user that I don’t even know.

Flickr does have a page that shows your contacts most recent uploads, but this page is very limited and only shows the most recent 1 or 5 photos. There is also no way to filter it so that you see the photos that are faved/commented on the most and are likely to be the more interesting photos.

Get rid of Explore and replace it with something that is focused much more on your contacts than people you don’t even know. A personalized Explore would be a far more interesting page.

6. Improve Group Search. I have no idea why Group Search sucks so badly on Flickr but it does. Frequently you will search for terms that you’ve posted in group thread conversations and Flickr will not return the thread where the word exists. I would think that Yahoo! should know a few things about search and am surprised that searching for threads in groups has been so spotty for so many years. I have no idea why this is so bad, but it shouldn’t be.

7. Improve Data Portability. Flickr gives lipservice to data portability, but is not serious about it. As long as 99% of Flickr users can’t or won’t figure out how to move their photos easily to another site they are just fine with things. Functional lock in. The data that we put on Flickr is our data. It belongs to us. We are paying Flickr to hold it for us, but it belongs to us.

Recently my friend Adam wrote up a post on a help forum post about the language Flickr uses for encouraging people to buy Pro accounts. They said that they felt that Flickr is holding your photos hostage (beyond the 200 photo free limit) if you don’t upgrade to Pro. Only Pro accounts have access to original images on Flickr.

Flickr should let any member get their photos out of Flickr at any time. Further they should offer competitors API keys to allow them to build service to service direct transfer applications to move your photos to another service if you want. If I don’t want to renew my Pro account on Flickr and want to move my photos to Picasa, this should be as easy as me pressing a single button and having all of my photos transfer over.

Today it is very difficult and clunky to get your photos off of flickr. A few third party apps are available, but there are lots of problems with them. They fail if you have too many photos. They are only Windows based, etc. etc. Flickr has functional lock in and holds photos in a silo while talking about how they allow you to get your photos out of Flickr. Flickr should follow the lead of Google here and publicly both state and help make our data more portable. This ought to be part of being a good web citizen today.

8. Uncensor Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Germany and Maktoob.com. At present Flickr censors content to these places. It’s still mind boggling to me that a photo of a painting that I took in the Art Institute of Chicago can’t be seen by people in India. Trying to censor the world’s web is messy business. Flickr/Yahoo should take a stand for freedom and uncensor these locations. Google last year took a bold step of choosing to walk about from China rather than censor results there. Yahoo should stand for freedom and stop censoring in these places.

9. Let people sell their photos for stock photography. Flickr missed the boat by giving away stock photography to Getty Images. Stock photography is probably the single easiest way for Yahoo to dramatically increase the profitability of Flickr. Getty Images represents a tiny fraction of the images available on Flickr. The Flickr/Getty deal was probably done as a defensive move by Getty more than anything to keep Yahoo out of the multi billion dollar market that is stock photography today. What resulted is that users get a paltry 20% payout for a very small number of their images that can be sold.

Flickr could be a far more formidable competitor to Getty. Flickr has the size and market share to dramatically disrupt this market. The stock photography marketplace is *far* more complicated than this. But oversimplifying things, Flickr should offer two collections for sale (if a user chooses to offer their photos for sale). Cleared photos and uncleared photos. Uncleared photos should pay more to the photographer than cleared photos. Cleared photos would be reviewed by a team of stock photography experts (Yahoo could even buy one of the smaller stock agencies that already has experience clearing images) and result in a lower payout to the photographer. By turning Flickr into the world’s largest stock photography agency Yahoo could receive significant revenue from Flickr and Flickr photographers personally could benefit much more from posting their work there.

10. Build a better mobile app. The Yahoo built mobile app for Flickr sucks ass (sorry). As I understand it, it wasn’t even developed by the Flickr team. Over at Quora former Flickr Engineer Kellan Elliott-McCrea answers the question, "Why did Flickr miss the mobile photo opportunity that Instagram and picplz are pursuing?" There is no compelling mobile Flickr experience today.

Recently, one of my favorite Flickr photographers, Michael Wilbur, deleted his entire Flickr account and is now one of the most popular photographers on Instagram. Flickr needs to develop a more compelling mobile experience. Part of this should be a very easy way to view group threads via mobile.

There you go. Food for thought. And keep on flickering.

Winter brings with it an array of holidays, family picnics, and snow balls! On the other hand winter also brings long mornings filled with excruciating car troubles. Preparing beforehand on the maintenance of your car can help greatly with the endless troubles a car can give in winter.

A well maintained car has less chances of ditching you while driving then an ill maintained one. You should have a regular maintenance checklist of your car throughout the year. Some specific maintenance is advisable on a seasonal basis. And generally annual preparation tips include cleaning battery posts, inspection of spark plugs and breaks, and checking the engine oil.

Here are some winter maintenance tips you should keep in mind for preparing your car for winter:

• Check your Antifreeze: antifreeze plays a vital role of your car’s protection against cold weather. A car generally has a solvent made with 50% water and 50% antifreeze in it. The level of the mixture should be checked regularly and should ideally be at full level. If you do not have the knowledge or are not open to the idea of popping that hood of your car, many service centers and mechanics will check the level for you free of any charge. A radiator flush should have already been done in the last season for optimal performance of your car.

• Inspect your tires: Good and healthy tires have many benefits. From assisting in good and efficient breaking to boosting the mileage, a good set of tires proves to be a knight in shining armor in winter. The depth of the tires should be checked for optimum depth. The recommended tire depth is 2/32′ but if your tire depth is less then 4/32″ then you should consider buying a new tire. Along with a tire in a good condition, the tire pressure should also be checked and maintained at the recommended pressure for the tire, the tire losses pressure in winter because of contraction of air molecules.

• Replace your wipers: In winter wipers do the job of cleaning and wiping anything that falls on your windshield, from snowfall to splashed slush from molten snow, the wipers of a car take care of everything. For proper cleaning a wiper should be in a healthy condition. The rubber blades of the wiper should be checked for cracks and unevenness resulting from change in weather conditions, or long term use.

• Check your windshield washer fluid: Windshields are used regularly in winter for cleaning the windshield. A lot of dirt and dust settled on the windscreen turns to stains when it mixes with dewdrops or water from snow. The use of washer fluid is used extensively for this reason only. The level of washer fluid should be checked regularly to avoid running out of the washer fluid. Care should be taken not to use anything other then washer fluid in the washer fluid reservoir because a washer fluid is specially designed for winter and wont freeze.

Apart from the above mentioned tips, many other precautions could be undertaken to suit the individual needs.

restored quadriga atop Brandenburg Gate ►pale-verdigris gateway build-up (“horses’-herma”) in gloomy night◄
General Car Reviews
The quadriga atop the Brandenburg Gate—restored since 1991—is shining in pale-verdigris against a black backdrop of a gloomy night.

In 1793 Schadow installed a roman victory goddess as holding up a coronal of olive leaves behind a roman, triumphal carriage.

In 1806 this sculpture was dislodged to Paris by Napoléon Bonaparte but eight years later—in 1814—the booty was tracked down and re-confiscated by the prussian General Blücher. Back again in Berlin the restituted trophy was overhauled and revised by Schinkel in 1815 who inserted the erect shaft in between the pairs of horses (“Pferdeherme”), supplemented harness for the four domesticated mammals and a coronet of oak leaves for the goddess, and set up the “perch”, i.e. the banner-like standard with the iron cross inside a wreath of oak leaves & acorns from which an eagle coronated by a christian cross atop a prussian crown holds lookout.

The iron cross on the Brandenburg was posted in 1815 and contains the initials ‘FW’ and the figure ’1813′ in remembrance of its endowment as the prussian war decoration by Friedrich Wilhelm III. in the year 1813 which marks the beginning of the first restoration—the second such reanimation was instigated by the Hitlerists in 1933 under the pompous title “Third Reich”—of the 1806 passed away cadaver of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation by ‘freedom wars’ (‘Befreiungskriege’) that were the prussian tribute to ‘the wars of the 6th coalition’ (1812-1814) for breaking Napoleon’s hegemony over Europe. On 18th Oktober 1913, i.e. at the eve of WWI, all around the victory goddess of the Brandenburg triumphal arch a wilhelmine state act was held by the german emperor; like everywhere in the suburbs of the Berlin and the German Reich it was celebrated the centenary of the Battle of Leipzig

Originally an emblematic build-up to the Restoration epoch (1815-1848) the “horses’—herma” was rededicated in 1991 and refurbished 2000/02 by private businessmen and the Berlin Monument Conservation Foundation that were sponsored to indulge their “faible” for the “imperial prussian flair”.

The Brandenburg Gate in 1945 was one of the few structures still standing on the Pariser Platz but the relics of the copper quadriga atop it had to be melted down; only the head of one of the four horses was preserved and can be visited in the Märkisches Museum. In 1958 a replica of bronze was built up to replace the copper quadriga.
Vehicles and pedestrians could travel freely through the thouroughfare until 13th August 1961; then the wall with its death strip ran just behind it.

On 26th of June 1963, — two years after the put-up of the Wall —, U.S. President John F. Kennedy officially visited West-Berlin and the Wall at the Brandenburg Gate, where he himself and the West-Berlin mayor wanted him to deliver his prepared speech but the west-german chancellor which was demonstratively all the time accompanying him agreed with the western allies that the venue near the soviet sector would have been much too provocative. So he could not hold his oratio in sight of the contended cold-war-focus-point but had to shift to another location: That was the square in front of the office-building of the then ruling mayor Willy Brandt. Unlike Ronald Reagan who could easily overtake the venue twenty four years later—only protected by transparent bullet-proof glass to prevent potential snipers from behind the wall and two decades of détente (“Ostpolitik”) followed up by glasnost & perestroika.

» (speech by President John F. Kennedy on 26 June 1963 at ‘Rathaus Schöneberg’ in West-Berlin
When he tried to take sight of the Brandenburg Gate on that sultry summerday climbing on the tourists’ platform on the then Hindenburg-Platz he was ‘welcomed’ by large red curtains that were hung into the five doorways of the arch to prevent the VIP from speaking and spying to the East …

In the 1980s, decrying the existence of two German states, the then West Berlin mayor Richard von Weizsäcker said:
The German question will remain open as long as the Brandenburg Gate is closed.”

On June 12, 1987, U.S. President Ronald Reagan spoke to the West Berlin populace at the Brandenburg Gate:
To those listening in East Berlin, a special word: Although I cannot be with you, I address my remarks to you just as surely as to those standing here before me. For I join you, as I join your fellow countrymen in the West, in this firm, this unalterable belief: Es gibt nur ein Berlin. … we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace …Perhaps this gets to the root of the matter, to the most fundamental distinction of all between East and West. The totalitarian world produces backwardness because it does such violence to the spirit, thwarting the human impulse to create, to enjoy, to worship. The totalitarian world finds even symbols of love and of worship an affront. Years ago, before the East Germans began rebuilding their churches, they erected a secular structure: the television tower at Alexander Platz. Virtually ever since, the authorities have been working to correct what they view as the tower’s one major flaw, treating the glass sphere at the top with paints and chemicals of every kind. Yet even today when the sun strikes that sphere — that sphere that towers over all Berlin the light makes the sign of the cross.
Demanding the razing of the Berlin Wall and addressing the then General Secretary of the Communist Party of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev, Ronald Reagan said:
And I invite Mr. Gorbachev: Let us work to bring the Eastern and Western parts of the city closer together, so that all the inhabitants of all Berlin can enjoy the benefits that come with life in one of the great cities of the world. To open Berlin still further to all Europe, East and West, let us expand the vital air access to this city, finding ways of making commercial air service to Berlin more convenient, more comfortable, and more economical. We look to the day when West Berlin can become one of the chief aviation hubs in all central Europe.
… There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall! … The wall cannot withstand freedom.

On July 12, 1994, U.S. President Bill Clinton spoke at the Gate about peace in post-Cold War Europe.
On December 21, 2000, the Brandenburg Gate was privately refurbished at a 6 million $ cost.
Depiction of German euro coinage: On the obverse sides of the 1 € and 2 € coins, there are stylized prussian eagles; on the the 50¢, 20¢ and 10¢ coins there are the Brandenburg Gates; on the 5¢, 2¢ and 1¢ coins there are twigs with five oak leaves and two acorns.

The Brandenburg Gate & The Wall
Berlin, it is worth remembering, came of age as a garrison town. Though Friedrich Wilhelm I was not interested in beautifying the city, he did seek to promote its growth. Needing more space to quarter soldiers and more artisans to supply their needs, he gave away hundreds of lots and compelled the recipients to build houses on them. He expanded the city limits and, in the 1730s, replaced the Great Elector’s old fortifications with a new wall built around the expanded city. This was not a fortification but a customs barrier to regulate commerce and prevent soldiers from deserting. (For all the differences, in both these purposes we can see a resemblance to Ulbricht’s later wall.) Among the wall’s eighteen gates, the most prominent lay at the southern and western edges of the expanded Friedrichstadt, where large plazas were laid out inside the gates: a circular plaza inside the southern Halle Gate, an octagon at the Potsdam Gate, and a square at the western terminus of Unter den Linden. Friedrich Wilhelm envisioned all three spaces as military parade grounds.
The last of these gates concludes our look at the eighteenthcentury city. It marks the outer end of the grand axis of Unter den Linden, scene of royal processions, military parades, and elegant promenades throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Though it is not the original Brandenburg all that remains of the eighteenth-century wall, apart from a fragment excavated in Stresemannstrasse. The original baroque gate that separated Unter den Linden from the Tiergarten was replaced at the order of King Friedrich Wilhelm II, Frederick the Great’s successor. The commission given to the architect Carl Gotthard Langhans ushered in a new era in Berlin architecture. To the end of his long life (in 1786), Frederick the Great had insisted on building in ornate rococo forms that had long since fallen from favor in Europe’s more fashionable capitals. Langhans’s Brandenburg Gate, completed in 1791, brought the more severe lines of neoclassicism to Berlin.
Langhans’s simple design, modeled on the Propylaea of Athens, comprises a double row of Doric columns that frame five openings. The gate’s other famous feature is the copper quadriga that was mounted atop it in 1793. This work of the young sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow portrays a goddess riding in a chariot drawn by four horses galloping into the city. The Brandenburg Gate, with its quadriga, has long been Berlin’s most famous symbol, rivaled only by the more ephemeral Wall. Its image has adorned commemorative coins, playing cards, historicist and expressionist paintings, posters for all kinds of events, and East and West Berlin postcards and tourist brochures. It may be an admirable work of architecture and sculpture, but that does not explain its symbolic resonance. Nor does its intended function. Unlike many nineteenth-century structures, it was not erected as a national monument. Its size and form made it much more than a utilitarian structure, but it was nevertheless a functional gate in the city wall, flanked by guardhouses.
History has made the Brandenburg Gate a German monument. At first its official name was the “Gate of Peace”; it was not, after all, a Roman triumphal arch. But its identity changed in 1806, when Napoleon defeated Prussia and triumphantly entered its capital through the western gate. He showed his admiration for the quadriga by ordering that it be taken down and shipped to Paris to join his other confiscated art treasures. The emperor thus became known locally as the “horse thief of Berlin”, and the denuded gate became the symbol of Prussian and German resistance. In 1813 Schadow himself proposed to fill the quadriga’s place atop the gate with an enormous cast of the Iron Cross, the new military medal designed by Schinkel at the behest of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. Upon Napoleon’s defeat in 1814, however, a triumphant procession returned the quadriga to Berlin, the neighboring square was renamed Paris Square (Pariser Platz), and the “Gate of Peace” became a “Gate of Victory”. Schinkel designed new insignia for the goddess’s staff: a Prussian eagle and, within a wreath, the Iron Cross.
Thereafter, the gate became ever more firmly established as a symbol of Prussia and its capital. It became the traditional backdrop for military parades (following Napoleon’s example) and for the ceremonial reception of state guests. When the entire customs wall was tom down in the 1860s, the Brandenburg Gate remained; from then on, it was strictly a monument. After Germany was unified under Prussian leadership in 1871, the victorious troops returning from France were welcomed at the Brandenburg Gate. The Prussian monument had become firmly established as a German national symbol, the site of many more ceremonies before soldiers marched through it on their way back to France in 1914. The Nazis, too, embraced the old symbol of victory. The night Hitler was appointed chancellor, January 30, 1933, thousands of torch-bearing Nazi brownshirts marched through the gate.
When the bombers came, the Nazis generally did a better job of evacuating art treasures than saving people. But they apparently did not dare risk morale by removing the goddess and her horses. Instead, in 1942 they had plaster casts made of the quadriga. By 1945, when Soviet soldiers planted their red flag atop the gate, it was badly damaged and only fragments of the quadriga remained. The East German leaders who inherited these ruins decided to keep the gate and adopt it as their own. The shattered quadriga’s fate was less certain. Artists and politicians entertained several proposals for a suitable new sculpture: a group of workers, children dancing around a globe, a mother with child, Picasso’s dove of peace. A Western newspaper, hearing of the last proposal in 1949, declared that if the dove of peace were to nest placidly at the entrance to the Communist world, the West would be obliged to raise a banner in front of the gate with the words Dante had affixed to the gates of Hell in his lnferno: “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.” {N23} Eventually, however, the East decided to restore the quadriga instead.
Unfortunately, the gate stood in the Soviet sector, the plaster casts were in the West, and during the 1950s the two regimes were busy denouncing each other as criminals and usurpers. After the failed uprising against the East German government on June 17, 1953, the West renamed the street that continued Unter den Linden west of the gate “the Street of 17 June.“ But the two Berlins had only one Brandenburg Gate, and it provided a rare opportunity for cooperation. West Berlin agreed to recreate the statues while the East restored the gate. This joint venture did not, of course, proceed without incident. In 1958 the reconstructed quadriga was brought to the sectoral boundary, a few steps from the gate, and simply left there for the East Germans to claim. Before putting it up, the Easterners sawed the Prussian eagle off the top of the goddess’s staff and the Iron Cross out of the wreath. For the Western public, this was vandalism and deceit, but it should not really have been a surprise. In 1957 West Germany had legalized the display of the Iron Cross, which the GDR had banned as a militarist symbol. In 1958 the Eastern press was filled with editorials and letters demanding the removal of these “fascist“ ornaments. The Brandenburg Gate was once again to be a gate of peace, declared the East Berlin government. {N24}
With the goddess’s staff crowned only by a wreath, the quadriga and gate would remain from 1958 until 1990; only their surroundings would change utterly. At first the gate still filtered traffic passing across the sector line between the Tiergarten and the shattered ruins along Unter den Linden. As the two halves of the city grew apart, the gate acquired a rich new symbolic resonance, captured, for example, in scenes of the 1961 American comedy film
One, Two, Three, directed by Billy Wilder (whose ties to Berlin went back to the 1920s) and starring James Cagney as a representative of the Coca-Cola Company caught between the intrigues of Communists and ex-Nazis.
But the film was a commercial flop: by the time it was completed, the Wall had made crossing the Brandenburg Gate anything but a laughing matter. Because the western edge of the Mitte district coincided with the location of Friedrich Wilhelm I’s wall, the sectoral boundary followed the same course after 1945, and after 1961, so did a long stretch of the new wall. The Brandenburg Gate was thus once again part of a wall. Here was a historical continuity that no one wanted to acknowledge. This time it was not a gate; the crossing points lay elsewhere. Erich Honecker, the Politbüro member in charge of national security and hence the man directing construction of the Wall, apparently pressed for the gate’s closure because he thought any activity around it would attract Western media attention, demonstrations, and provocations.{N25} He was probably right, but he may also have been swayed by his own regime’s frequent evocation of the Napoleon-like specter of West German troops marching triumphantly through the Brandenburg Gate on their way to destroy peace and socialism.
Both the gate and the quadriga had been designed to face into the City—that is, to the east. That is not what a visitor would expect, but the gate’s intended audience was local residents, not outsiders. The folk memory of Berlin seems to offer evidence of confusion on this point. Visitors are often told that the quadriga Originally faced the other direction and was turned around at some point—something that never happened. This is an old legend: an 1860 guidebook asserts that the goddess had faced away from town before Napoleon, but had been reerected looking inward in 1814.{N26} Late-twentieth-century versions of the legend tend to be vaguer about the date of the reversal; Ulbricht as well as Napoleon comes under suspicion as a possible culprit.
In its uncertain stance toward inside and outside, residents and visitors, the Brandenburg Gate resembled nothing so much as its newer neighbor, the Berlin Wall. With the Wall’s presence, the poignancy of the gate as symbol became stronger than ever. On its Eastern side, Pariser Platz starkly illustrated the desolation brought by the Wall. Once among Berlin’s most elegant squares, a place of palaces, the French and U.S. embassies, the Academy of Arts, and the city’s premier hotel, the Adlon, it was now bare except for the gate and the Wall. Tourists were restricted to its far end, but distinguished guests and officially invited delegations were brought to the gate and asked to admire the work of the border guards. From the Western side, the gate was now entirely inaccessible, and could only be seen from a dead-end street in the middle of the Tiergarten. Nevertheless, tourist buses regularly came by, and state visitors were brought there too. In 1963, when John F. Kennedy came to see it, he found that the East had hung red banners
i.e. five perpendicular flags, four of them were red (symbolizing the four-power-status of Berlin), the fifth in the main-gateway was black | red | golden signed with the GDR-coat of arms. klp }
between the columns that blocked any view beyond the gate—interpreted as a Cold War gesture with more figurative meaning than the East had intended. In 1987, the gate served as the backdrop for Ronald Reagan’s speech, with bulletproof glass erected behind the rostrum. (Bill Clinton, in 1994, was the first U.S. President privileged to speak on Pariser Platz, under the heads of the quadriga’s horses instead of their posteriors.)
Both East and West Berliners claimed the gate as the symbol of their city and of their version of German unity. But it may have been the foreign media from the West that made the gate the preeminent symbol of the less telegenic Berlin Wall. During the days after November 9, 1989, the TV networks made the Brandenburg Gate the backdrop for their cameras. It was a fortunate coincidence that the semicircular barrier blocking the gate was the only section of the Wall wide and flat enough to stand (and dance) on. Since the Brandenburg Gate was not a functioning gate, however, the hordes of East Germans actually passed through the Wall elsewhere for several weeks. Finally, on December 22 , 1989. West German chancellor Helmut Kohl led a phalanx of politicians in a ceremony reopening the Brandenburg Gate. Evidence later surfaced that Kohl had in fact pressured the East Germans to delay the opening for five weeks so that he could be present.
A few days later. New Year’s revelers climbed up to the newly accessihle quadriga and left it seriously damaged. Soon afterward, while the gate was being restored, the quadriga. too, was taken down for a careful restoration. Thereupon controversy erupted anew. The summer of 1991 saw a reprise of the 1958 debate about the quadriga, this time without the Cold War to define positions. A young Christian Democratic member of the Bundestag, Friedbert Pflüger, called for the Iron Cross and Prussian eagle to be left off the restored quaclriga. (They had been preserved since 1958 in an East Berlin museum; the reunification of the quadriga coincided with that of Germany.) His campaign found supponers across the political spectrum, only some of whom could be dismissed as leftists antipathetic to any sign of German national pride. The Berlin press anti public was nonetheless hard on Pflüger. He argued that symbols of Prussian patriotism had no place in the new Germany; but others suspected that his real motive was bitterness over the decision to move the governmcnt from Bonn. He was, more pointedly, accused of wanting to falsify history “à la Ulbricht”. Little attention was paid to his claim that he wanted to restore the original “Gate of Peace” and the original quadriga as it had existed up to 1806. It was easy for Pflüger’s supporters to conclude that Berlin was rejecting historical authenticity in favor of patriotic nostalgia.
In fact, no one was proposing the return of the goddess’s original staff, gone since 1814, when Schinkel had not merely added the Iron Cross and Prussian eagle but had redesigned the entire staff. The quadriga Napoleon took, for example, had a Roman eagle where the Prussian one later perched. And that had actually been the goddess’s
third staff: Schadow’s first two designs had proved so unpopular that he was obligated to replace each of them within months. In other words, the debate in 1991 was between restoring the 1814 quadriga and the 1958 version. Since the latter’s repudiation of Prussian militarism had been the work of Ulbricht’s regime, it found few defenders. Amid good words for Prussian symbols—the Iron Cross, it was pointed out, came out of the wars of liberation against Napoleon, not World War I or II—Berlin’s leaders ceremonially rededicated the restored quadriga, with the staff of 1814-1945 as well as an artificial patina, on August 6, 1991, the two hundredth anniversary of the gate.
The gate itself could thus claim its traditional place as the symbol of Berlin as well as its newer status as the preeminent symbol of unity. Yet it stood in the middle of the city’s main east-west thoroughfare; the symbol of unity physically separated the two Berlins. The relationship between the gate and the all-important circulation of traffic sparked another debate. The attachment many Germans have to their cars has always stopped short of the American practice of tearing down cities to make way for cars, but the passion of Gennan car lovers seems to arouse in Green-thinking Germans the same kind of suspicion that passionate patriotism does. Happily the question of driving through the Brandenburg Gate did not create clear battle lines. Some car haters wanted to reserve the gate for pedestrians and bicyclists, but others thought that the gate could serve to limit and slow auto traffic. Car lovers’ favourited solutions were a tunnel under the gate or a scheme to circumvent it. The latter, in fact, had first proposed at the tum of the century, and Nazi planners as well had sought to remove the buildings on each side of the gate to make way for traffic. In the 1990s, those buildings were long gone, but plans to direct traffic away from the gate were nevertheless opposed by some who thought it should serve as a gate, a symbol or German unity, not a traffic island, and by others who wanted to rebuild Pariser Platz as the enclosed space it once had been. An initial compromise permitted only buses and taxis through the gate, and they were restricted to the wider central passage, once reserved for the emperor’s carriage.
When the monarchy ended in 1918, that central passage was not the only place that lost its identity. For all the turbulence of Berlin’s history under the Hohenzollerns, they arguably presided over a degree of stability that has not been approached in the rest of the twentieth century. Many Berliners are understandably reluctant to frame their identity in terms of the troubled eras that followed: the weak Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, and the divided city. Hence the wish to reach back to the relatively placid era of monarchs. How can that nostalgia possibly be satisfied? Since hardly anyone actually wants a king, it is difficult to know just what to salvage from the royal past. The much-restored but never removed Brandenburg Gate, with its twice-removed and thrice-reconstructed quadriga, is as authentic a symbol as Berlin can offer. Other buildings, visible or remembered, embody too rich a variety of meanings to permit any consensus about the legacy of old Berlin, or about how to restore it.

TIMELINE

1814 the quadriga became a symbol of national pride and inspired many anti-napoleonic caricatures („Übermut nahm sie – Tapferkeit bringt sie zurück“, Daniel Berger)
1933 -1945 When the Nazis ascended to power they used the Gate as symbol for their party. – The Brandenburg Gate was used extensively by the Nazis for propaganda purposes, beginning with a torchlit parade by the SA following their acquisition of power in 1933. @barwick

In 1958 the red flag was replaced by the bronze quadriga from West-Berlin, and relocated in front of the left guardhous; moreover it was added a second flag in front of the right guardhouse: This one was the GDR-flag which was later – during the Mauerbau in 1961 – replaced by another red flag, and located atop the Brandenburg behind the carriage. @answers
In 1956 was decided to rebuild the Quadriga and to put a copy on top of the Brandenburger Tor. torstenbel
In 1950, the relics of the blown up copper Quadriga were removed and a red flag was waving there instead. In 1956 the restoration of the gate and its sculpture was decided by the East-Berlin municipal authorities. In 1957 the West-Berlin senate granted the money for the melting of a bronze Quadriga from a cast of the copper quadriga taken precautiously during WWII. In July 1958, the restoration of the Brandenburg Gate had been terminated, and on 1st-2nd August1958, the quadriga had been built up but was removed the next night (2nd – 3rd August), and stored in the Marstall: The prussian iron cross and eagle were dismantled on September 16th 1958 and on September 27th 1958 the quadriga re-installed. (History of the Brandenburg Gate)
… There had been some talk of removing it for safe keeping during the war, but the regime considered that too defeatist, and a compromise was reached whereby plaster casts were taken and put into storage… Kartofelpreußer
1961: «peaceful coexistence»
In spite of the brave show put up by the restored quadriga of Schadow crowning the Brandenburg Gate (and now facing east), the old centre of the city, now in the Soviet sector, remains a grim unreconstructed desert hidden by the Potemkin façades on either side of Unter den Linden. It is as if the east had given up the struggle and drawn back into its shell to hide its real face from a west Berlin with which it could never successfully compete. What life it has has shifted to the Alexander Platz and the somewhat mellowed architectural inanities of the Stalin Allee, to which time and grime have given an almost respectable air. AIR OF MELANCHOLY East Berlin is now merely drab, no longer so grim, save at night, and things have improved vastly since the uprising of 1953. The crowd looks no more ill-clad than that in any populous area in west Berlin; only its shoes give it away. And there is some more functional building in the periphery. But the regime is now behaving almost as though it had given up east Berlin as a bad job and were concentrating on improving the standard of living in other large cities like Magdeburg and Leipzig. If things are so much better in the west, one of the unsolved mysteries is why east Berlin is not deserted by its inhabitants. Apart from attachment to home and family, there must be behind the drab shop-window some material advantage which a highly competitive capitalist society still fails to provide. And there is always the possibility of escaping to Karl-Marx Strasse for a breath of freer air and a cup of good coffee. In spite of its bright lights, its prosperity, its incomparable atmosphere (the stimulating virtues of the Berliner Luft are not exaggerated) there is about west Berlin something undefinably melancholy, reminiscent of the Vienna of Carol Reed and Graham Greene. Those who live there are perhaps not aware of it, or try not to think about il; but it strikes the returning visitor in countless ways. Berlin is an aging city, its youth is going west, in spite of efforts to retain it. The vast monuments of an Imperial past, whether ruined like the Gedächtniskirche. or restored like Charlottenburg and Bellevue Palaces, are like discarded properties on a stage which is no longer used—or used but once a year when the Federal President comes to town. The conscious effort of Berlin to remain a capital—not only culturally and artistically, which it does successfully, but politically as well—prompts much respect and sympathy but carries less and less conviction as the cleavage of Germany hardens into what appears to be the accepted pattern of peaceful coexistence. Behind the Bright Lights of Berlin, From Our Bonn Correspondent, The Times | April 10, 1961
Approaching the Brandenburg Gate is not easy nowadays. On the West Berlin side, you are stopped by a policeman at the intersection called Grosser Stern, half a mile away … when the seismographs of history have registered a particular shock — in 1848, 1871, 1914, 1933 — there have been repercussions around the Brandenburg Gate. Within its sight, the Reichstag went up in flames. After the fall of Paris, Hitler made grandiose plans to build his own Via Triamphalis between the Stern and the Brandenburg Gate, but again the wheel of history turned. Thoughts at Berlin’s Symbolic Gate; To the people of the divided city, the Brandenburg Gate stands for hopes and fears. Berlin’s Symbolic Gate, By Joseph Wechsberg Berlin, New York Times, November 19, 1961
2008: Brandenburg gate venue for sitting U.S. presidents only? German Chancellor Angela Merkel has signaled unease over the prospect of a possible speech by Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama at Berlin’s historic Brandenburg Gate. Merkel has "only limited understanding for using the Brandenburg Gate as an election campaign backdrop, as it were, and has expressed skepticism about pursuing such plans," Thomas Steg, a spokesman for the chancellor, told reporters. … Steg noted that the Brandenburg Gate has become "a place with a particular exclusivity, intensity and symbolism" in view of past speeches by sitting U.S. presidents and events such as a large rally in solidarity with the United States after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. … Steg said that "no German (chancellor) candidate would think of using (Washington’s) National Mall or Red Square in Moscow for rallies, because it would be considered inappropriate." He stressed that giving permission to use the venue is a matter not for Merkel’s government, but for Berlin city authorities. Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit said Tuesday that he would be "delighted" for Obama to appear at the Brandenburg Gate or elsewhere. (Wednesday, July 09, 2008, @foxnews | politics)

─► Quadriga of Victory The Brandenburg Gate is a Triumphal Arch and stands on the former border between East & West Germany in the city of Berlin. The Neo-classical gate was designed by Carl Gatthard Langhans and was erected from 1788-1793 as a "Gate of Peace". The gate was inspired by the Propylaea, the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens. The structure is crowned by the "Quadriga of Victory", a statue of a chariot drawn by four horses. The Doric gateway once served as a customs port.
From 1961 to 1989 the gate was blocked as the construction of the Berlin Wall divided East and West Berlin. The gate was reopened on December 22, 1989 after the reunification of East- & West Berlin.

─► Senate Department for Urban Development Carl Gotthard Langhans selected as the model for his design the Propylaea in Athens, the monumental entry hall of the Acropolis. Just as the Propylaea led to a shrine of the Ancient world, this gate was to represent the access to the most important city of the Prussian kingdom. This reference to Antiquity made it the structure which founded the Classic age of architecture in Berlin, an epoch which brought the city its sobriquet "Spreeathen" ("Athens of the Spree" — Berlin’s river is called the Spree).
The relief on the pedestal portrays her again with her attendants. Personifications of virtues like friendship and statesmanship are represented, along with symbols of arts and sciences, because they make a city like Berlin bloom in times of peace. Reliefs with the exploits of Hercules in the passages allude to the time of the wars and the subsequent period of reconstruction, during which Friedrich II made Prussia into a European power and laid the foundation for flourishing trade and crafts. The gate thus is also a memorial for the king who died a few years before its construction.

DICTIONARY
The quadriga of the hippodrome of Constantinople resides today on St Mark’s Basilica in Venice; it was looted by Venetian Crusaders in the Fourth Crusade of 1204. In 1797 Napoleon brought the ancient quadriga from Constantinople to Paris. In 1808 he surmounted the sculpture on the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel which was designed by Charles Percier and Pierre Léonard Fontaine and built between 1806 and 1808 on the model of the Arch of Constantine I (312 AD) in Rome. In 1815 the booty had to be given back to Venice, and it was replaced by one sculptured by Baron François Joseph Bosio glorifying the Restoration of the Bourbons depicting Peace riding in a triumphal chariot led by gilded Victories on both sides…
Nike was the personification of victory for the ancient Greeks. There is existing a depiction of her from the 5th BCE that depicts her standing in chariot behind a quadriga. According to Hesiod’s Theogonia Nike was the daughter of Pallas, a Titan, and the river Styx. Her various sisters and brothers include: Kratos (Strength), Zelos (Zeal, Rivalry) and Bia (Force). Despite being the children of a Titan, these siblings fought alongside the Olympian gods against the Titans and were, as a result later honored. This image might be of the Nike from Delos, currently in the Athens National Museum and created around 550 BCE. Early depictions of Nike, like this one, tended to show her wingless. Later, during the Classical period, she not only appeared with wings but also other accoutrements of victory like the garland.
Herma (engl)
A Herma, herm or herme is a sculpture with a head, and perhaps a torso, above a plain, usually squared lower section, on which male genitals may also be carved at the appropriate height. In ancient Greece the statues functioned as a form of apotropaic and were placed at crossings, country borders and boundaries as protection. Before his role as protector of merchants and travelers, Hermes was a phallic god, associated with fertility, luck, roads and borders.
Heiliges Römisches Reich / Sacrum Romanum Imperium Nationis Germanicæ From 1792 onwards, revolutionary France was at war with various parts of the Empire intermittently. The Empire was formally dissolved on 6 August 1806 when the last Holy Roman Emperor Francis II (from 1804, Emperor Francis I of Austria) abdicated, following a military defeat by the French under Napoleon (see Treaty of Pressburg).

Karl Friedrich Schinkel (b. Neuruppin, Prussia 1781; d. Berlin, Germany 1841) was born in Neuruppin, Prussia in 1781. He studied under Friedrich Gilley at the Bauakademie in Berlin. Between 1803 and 1805, he travelled through Italy and France. He returned to a French controlled Prussia where he worked as a painter and stage designer. After the French were driven out of Prussia, Schinkel was appointed Surveyor to the Prussian Building Commission. As surveyor he redesigned the city with a series of buildings that expressed Prussia’s cultural ambitions and national pride. General disenchantment with France turned most Prussian architects against the classical Roman manner favoured by the Ecole des Beaux Arts. This national rejection led Schinkel to design in a Neo-Greek style that symbolically recalled the political and moral freedom of Athenian Greece. Although he preferred classic architecture, Schinkel created designs in both Classic and Gothic manners. His drawings suggest a continuous analysis between Neoclassical Prussia and Periclean Athens. 8 hours: WTO: Welthandel droht schlimmster Einbruch seit Kriegsende (AFP)

2nd April 2009 Is this the end of capitalism? Hardly, but it’s a great excuse for the antiglobalization crowd.
The housing bubble that floated into view in 2007 is turning into the blob that ate the world. Real-estate mortgages and their derivative securities are a significant problem. That discrete problem, however, has been pumped up to an historic "crisis of capitalism."
Capitalism didn’t tank the U.S. economy. Overbuilt housing did. Overbuilt housing tanked the economies of the U.K. and Ireland and Spain. If little else, we’ve learned that artificially cheap housing sets loose limitless moral hazard.
Virtually every white-shoe financial institution in the world, plus the Russians, stuffed their balance sheets with securities carved out of the dreams of real-estate developers. This plunge had less to do with capitalism than with psychosis, defined in textbooks as "a mental illness that markedly interferes with a person’s capacity to meet life’s everyday demands." For sane bankers that includes due diligence and risk management.
After the full folly of the mortgage plunge became public in September 2008, the broad credit markets locked up, stock indexes fell and the world’s economies spiraled into a severe recession.

2nd April 2009: U.S. property bust threatens condo(minium) "death spiral"
The apartments were converted to condos at the height of a boom that saw prices — inflated by speculation and fraud — double within four years, then tumble in the last three. A one-bedroom, 560-square-foot (52-square-meter) unit that topped out near 0,000 might now get ,000, leaving owners drowning in debt.
Still, said Housen, it could be worse. She pointed to a nearby tower where she said more than 200 of the 244 units have liens or lawsuits pending.
Housen said an upscale building not far away — where units that once sold for over million and are now priced below 0,000 — has 16 troubled apartments of 44 in the building.
The crisis could mean serious pain for Miami Beach, a resort town with 88,000 residents and 42,000 condos. If debtors walk away from their units, buildings could become derelict.
Condo advocates say banks are partly responsible for hobbling condo boards by being slow to foreclose on owners who have fallen behind.
Lenders don’t become responsible for an apartment’s costs until they foreclose and under current law, a bank is liable to pay only six months worth of fees in arrears, or 1 percent of the mortgage value, when it takes back a property.

Warning signs One of the common warning signs of an impending tipping point is when a system takes longer to recover to equilibrium after it is disturbed. Most systems exist in temporarily stable states of equilibrium. If the system is perturbed by some force and pushed in a new direction, it usually moves back toward equilibrium quickly. But if the system is approaching a tipping point, it tends to take longer to recover its balance.
Another universal warning sign is when fluctuations in the system slow down. For example, in a climate approaching a tipping point, the weather tends to look more similar day to day leading up to the big change. In a brain before an epileptic seizure, neighboring patches of neurons look more like each other than they would in a regular brain. Prior to major economic change, stock markets in different areas start to act similarly to each other. While fluctuations take longer in these systems, they often are greater in magnitude. That is, under normal circumstances fluctuations tend to be short and small. When a drastic transition approaches, conditions fluctuate between greater extremes, and the fluctuations take longer to pass. "Close to a tipping point the system becomes more inert," Scheffer said. "If you displace it, there is less of a tendency to come to its own equilibrium value. … The research is detailed in the Sept. 3 issue of the journal Nature.

Every year has seemed to be not a waste for most inventors. This is because these people always utilize their skill in improving just what presently is available. This shows how determined inventors are in coming up with brand spanking new goods and operations as they do it endlessly. Vehicles developed each year possess its own positive and negative attributes. Each and every vehicle features its own functions which make it stay ahead of other car folks. This is one reason why car reviews from authorities as well as shoppers who already have them are considered incredibly important. Whenever abrand newautois launched, authoritiesmake time toevaluatethem and thenthey presenttheir particularresultsas well as their suggestions to the public.

Not only authorities contribute to the buying public. Likewise, even severalbuyers themselves don’t onlyacquireautomobiles. Another issue that Dodge buyers usually face is choosing the dealer that can provide them what they need because there are actually a lot dealers to choose from. In Canada, there are hundreds of dealers out there. In Edmonton alone, there are about ten dealers to buy the Dodge vehicle  from.

To resolve the said issue, one smart thing to do in order for you to carry out the smartest selection in selecting the particular Dodge dealer to obtain the Dodge models is to take a good look at vehicle reviews as well as testimonials from other consumers. Cars is a 2006 animated feature film produced by Pixar and directed by both John Lasseter and Joe Ranft. It was the seventh Disney/Pixar feature film, and the final film by Pixar before it was bought by Disney. Set in a world populated entirely by anthropomorphic victory motor cars and other vehicles, it features voices by Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin, Jenifer Lewis, Tony Shalhoub, John Ratzenberger, George Carlin, Larry the Cable Guy and Michael Keaton as well as voice cameos by several celebrities including Richard Petty, Billy Crystal, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Bob Costas, Darrell Waltrip, Jay Leno, Michael Schumacher, and Mario Andretti.

victory motor cars premiered on May 26, 2006 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, and was released on June 9, 2006, to generally favorable reviews. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature, and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. It was released on DVD in late 2006 and on Blu-ray Disc in late 2007. Related merchandise, including scale models of several of the cars, broke records for retail sales of merchandise based on a Disney/Pixar film, with an estimated billion in sales.[2]

The last race of the Piston Cup stock car racing season ends in a three-way tie between retiring veteran Strip “The King” Weathers, perennial runner-up and dirty fighter Chick Hicks, and rookie Lightning McQueen. A tiebreaker race is scheduled for one week later at the Los Angeles International Speedway. McQueen, eager to start practice in California as soon as possible in order to become Cup champion and gain the sponsorship of Dinoco Oil, pushes his driver Mack to travel all night long. Mack is too exhausted to notice when McQueen, asleep, falls out the back of the truck. McQueen awakes in traffic and speeds off and thinks he can see Mack, but it’s another truck. He catches the attention of a Sheriff and speeds away , but he crashes in the run-down town of Radiator Springs, inadvertently tearing up its main street. McQueen is arrested and tried the next day by the town’s judge and doctor, Doc Hudson, who at first wants McQueen out of town as fast as possible, but at the insistence of Sally Carerra, the town’s lawyer, assigns him community service to repave the road.

McQueen finds that the job of pulling the asphalt-laying machine requires a slow pace despite attempts to complete it faster. As the days pass, McQueen becomes friends with many of the townsfolk, and learns that Radiator Springs was once a popular waypoint along U.S. Route 66, but effectively disappeared from the map when a nearby interstate was built and bypassed the town, causing many of the businesses and residents to leave. McQueen also discovers that Doc is actually the “Hudson Hornet”, a three-time Piston Cup champion forced to retire after a racing accident, who chose to disappear quietly in Radiator Springs. McQueen, encouraged by his new friends, successfully completes the road and spends an extra day in town, cruising with Sally and partaking of businesses from the remaining shops to get a new paint job and tires. However, that night, Mack, followed by the media, finally catches up to McQueen, who reluctantly leaves Radiator Springs in order to make the race on time.

As McQueen prepares to race, his thoughts keep returning to his new friends, and distracts him from performing well. However, he is surprised to discover that Doc, outfitted in his “Hudson Hornet” colors, and others from Radiator Springs are serving as his pit crew. Encouraged by their presence and their incredible pit stop speed, as well as using tricks he learned from them while in Radiator Springs to overcome Chick Hicks’ dirty tactics, McQueen is able to gain the lead. On the last lap of the race, Hicks purposely runs into The King to try to catch up to McQueen, sending The King into an accident. McQueen stops inches short of winning the Cup to drive back and push The King across the finish line, preventing what happened to Doc from happening to The King, and allowing Hicks to take the Cup. After the race, Hicks is shunned for his tactics despite his victory, while McQueen is praised by The King and his wife as well as the press and crowd for his sportsmanship. McQueen returns to Radiator Springs and announces that he will set up his off-season headquarters there, helping to revitalize the town and its business, much to the pleasure of his new friends.

The H2 SUV/SUT/Hydrogen is the second vehicle sold under the Hummer marque of General Motors Corporation. It is a large truck (lighter and slightly slimmer than the Hummer H1, while slightly longer and slightly taller) with room for six passengers (including driver). The rearmost part of the H2 SUV was modified to a pickup truck bed for the 2005 H2 SUT ("Sport Utility Truck").Contents

Overview

Hummer H2 SUT

A Hummer H2 limousine.

The H2 is built under contract by AM General at a specially constructed plant in Mishawaka, Indiana, USA. Although it shares GM’s GMT820 truck platform with the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, those vehicles differ in many ways and are constructed in three other GM plants. The H2′s final frame assembly is made up of 3 sections: The front uses a modified GM 2500-Series (or did until November 8, 2009) utility frame, the mid-section is all new and is completely boxed, and the rear section uses a modified GM 1500-Series frame which is upgraded for the 8,600 pound (3629 kg) gross vehicle weight. The 2008 Hummer H2 does 0-60 in 8.0 seconds.

H2 sales were initially strong, but fell to 28,898 for 2004 and 23,213 for 2005. [1] GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner announced on June 3, 2008, the closing of several truck and SUV plants saying high fuel prices have produced a rapid and permanent change in consumer preferences. Wagoner also said GM is looking at possibly selling its Hummer unit after reviewing the SUV brand that is based on military vehicles. The Hummer H3 mid-size SUV gets about 13 to 14 miles per gallon in city driving in the most recent EPA ratings. The H1 and H2 are even larger vehicles with lower MPG, but these are not required by the EPA to post the MPG. The brand has become the symbol to many members of the public of a gas-guzzling large U.S. vehicle. From: [1]

The H2 was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2003.The H2 appered in the video game Mdnight Club 3

Application

The H2 has a massive truck frame and has a wider-than-average track firm that may offer stability against overturning compared to some of the more common light truck SUVs, although objective tests have not been performed by the government or other outside parties due to its specialized vehicle class. It is marketed as both a general purpose vehicle and as an off-road vehicle. Because of mass marketing by GM, it is primarily used as a passenger vehicle on typical roads. Along with the Ford Excursion, the H2 is also a very common vehicle for a limousine conversion.

The Hummer H2 is also prominently featured on CBS’ CSI:Miami, driven mainly by the chief of the Miami-Dade Police Department crime lab (Lt. Horatio Caine, played by David Caruso), as well as three of his colleagues: Detective Calleigh Duquesne (played by Emily Procter), Eric Delko (played by Adam Rodriguez) and Ryan Wolfe (played by Jonathan Togo).

In the 2007 film Transformers, the Autobot field medic Ratchet transforms into a Search and Rescue-themed Hummer H2 for his vehicle/disguise mode. Production designer Jeff Mann had a car built from scratch: "We looked at some military Hummer ambulances and some Red Cross vehicles from the ’80s that had an H1 foundation which eventually evolved into a search and rescue vehicle with a crazy color, kind of chartreuse green.

We are all consumers and with the internet, we are bombarded with products all the time that may be worthy for our attention because in this day and age, our attention span seems to be fleeting. That is one of the disadvantages of the computer generation: minimal attention span. Still, when something gets our attention, it may be worth taking some time to look at that product or gimmick. There are many ways how we make a decision on whether to purchase the product. The first one is obviously the appeal of the product to your needs and wants. When in a bind whether to purchase the product, the question to ask yourself is do i need it or do i want it? Do you need an extra pair of an addidas barricade 6 tennis shoes or do i want it? Do i need a new Toyota Prado or do i want it? The next consideration is the budget or the price appeal. Does it fit in your budget?

This consideration is very flexible with the onset of credit cards and payment plans especially for big ticketed items. For example, with the housing market on the slump, it may be the best time for you to buy a house. If you have enough money for a 20% downpayment on the house and are able to negotiate for a fixed term 20 or 30 year loan, then perhaps you can negotiate around 30% of the listed price of the house and might get a great deal. The other consideration to think about is the product reviews and comments on the product. There may be some websites that have Sytropin Reviews or a blog about the product sytropin. Browse and see what the general consensus is but be wary as some of them may be planted.

You will know if the review is partial because at the end of the review, there may be a link within the article to the company website. This is important because if the link is an external one, meaning it is not part of the article, then you can fairly assume that it was an independent review or comment about the product Sytropin. You can also use reviews done by professionals of that industry or niche. Car reviews for example tend to be objective as they tell you the process of how they reviewed it and what they compared it to. The other thing that you can also do is to test the product yourself. For this you may have to go to a store and test out the product and depending on some products, they may even offer money back guarantees or refunds.

Insuring your possessions, whether it is your house, expensive household goods or your car, a one-stop shop could be the Lancaster Insurance Services Ltd. Particularly their car insurance products are worth looking into, as they are very customer-centric and popular.

This company is operating from 1984 providing insurance services and products to the UK public. It has a panel of expert insurers, who are themselves reviewed periodically by the company owners and are open to public scrutiny on request. The experts have given quite an edge to Lancaster Insurance Services, which helps the company to offer tailor-made quotations and plans to its customers. Its products revolve entirely on the customer’s specific needs and requirements. Lancaster ensures you get quality products and services, not just some cheap insurance cover.

Right from the classic car insurance the company insures land rovers and vans as well – covering the whole vehicle sector. You get the car breakdown cover for as little as twenty-nine pounds and ninety-five shillings. The insurers’ panel, comprising of the best know names in UK for recovery – Equity Red Star, who provide the general car insurance services and Inter Partner Assistance, which offers the legal motor expense cover product, belongs to the AXA Group. Such stalwarts from the insurance sector give Lancaster Insurance Services the room to customize the insurance plans according to your own desires.

When the company went in to classic car policies from just selling claims products and services to its clients, in 2004, it changed its stature in the insurance world. This exceptional decision charted its growth upwards and in 2008 Lancaster went into the hands of The Capita Group Plc that brought in more expertise and the administration improved further, taking the company to greater heights.

The customer service team at the Lancaster Car Insurance Company is available throughout the day to answer all your queries and even handle complaints. Other facilities are:

Cancellation of policy and premiums against nominal charges
Monthly installments for premium payments
Attractive discount offers

For all this and more, you may visit the agents or the official website of Lancasterinsurance.

Top Tips for Buying a Second Hand Car

Hummer H2
General Car Reviews
Hummer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from HUMMER)

Engine:
2003–2007 6000 6.0 L (366 in³) V8

2008- GM VORTEC ENGINE#6200 6.2 L

I am a young, confident and intelligent woman, but when it comes to my car I regress to a 17 year old and view my father as my break down service, mechanic and general car encyclopedia. This attitude is common among many of my friends, male or female; like dogs can sense fear; my friends and myself are sure car dealers can sense ‘auto naivety’.

Maybe I’m just being parodied (or cynical) but the car industry can be more than a little intimidating if you’re not completely sure what’s going on under your bonnet. If you’re buying a second hand car here are just a few simple tips to help you out.

- Ask around; see if any friends or collogues can recommend anywhere. Reputation is critical in this industry, it will take a few seconds to run the dealerships name through an Internet search engine and you never know, you might find a posting on a forum or a review in a local publication.

- If you honestly don’t know you’re catalytic converter from your crankshaft you may want to take someone with you. Most of the breakdown services offer this service for a price. If you have a local mechanic you trust it may be worth asking if they could look over any potential cars. This may cost a bit but it will be worth it in the long run.

- When it comes to the car itself, you’re going to have some sort of idea about what you want. Make a list of the most important things (i.e. specific make or model, low mileage, service history etc). Work out which is the most important, would you be willing to sacrifice the perfect colour for having a lower mileage? This should stop your heart ruling your bank balance.

- Always take it for a test drive, even if you know jack about cars (If they wont let you take it for a text drive, walk away). You’ll know if it feels ok to drive. Check the biting point, if its very high it may mean the clutch is on the way out. Make sure you don’t have to put your foot through the floor to break; it may have worked for Fred Flintstone but it wont do you any favors.

- Check the colour is constant, if it looks like it’s been re-sprayed ask if there’s an explanation, check under mats and inside the door. A re spray could be evidence of a crash or a stolen vehicle.

- Ask to see the V5; this is the vehicle registration document. You cannot tax a car without one. Check all the details on the V5 match the car, check the registration plate, colour, registered seller etc. all the registered keepers should be on the V5, if its changed hands several times over the last few years there may be a serious problem with the car.

- Don’t be tempted to buy anything there and then. The sales assistant will tell you they’ve had several people interested in it, that its an amazing bargain. Always go away and think about it. Do a bit of research on that make and model of that year. Always use your common sense, most reputable dealership will offer a warranty; check that this covers parts and labour.

Once you’ve got your new car, you’re going want to keep it in top shape. Remember to keep the engine oil topped up and change it as often as recommended by the manufacture. Race Lubricants have an extensive and competitive selection of engine oil’s, and if there’s anything you’re unsure of, their technical help centre will be happy to answer any questions to make sure you get the right product for your engine.

Buying a new car might not be the easiest or cheapest exercise for everyone. This is why many people opt for used cars. However, this only solves the cost issue and even makes the exercise even a bit more difficult than the new car case. This is because you have to get a vehicle that is in good shape, which is hard to tell from a casual glance unlike when buying a used bike.

The internet has helped many buyers overcome many of the obstacles though. This is because unlike the normal ads that were posted on newspapers, the online ones will provide you with comprehensive information regarding the second hand car accompanied with photos. These can help you ascertain the quality of the vehicle.

In order to get the right vehicle, there are some steps you should take to ensure maximum use of the information provided by any auto trader.  For instance, from the images provided you can have a general feel of the outside and interior condition of the vehicle. However, since the images can be misleading, it is important to verify that the ones posted are that of the actual vehicle.

It is also important to compare different vehicles. This is a very important step that acts as your used car price guide. The point to note, in this case, is the price as well as the mileage. You should note that vehicles from a certain year will tend to have a certain average mileage count. That means one that exceeds this average by a bigger margin should be properly scrutinized. The same case applies to the ones with less mileage as it may indicate constant breakdowns.

It is also good to use the vehicle identification number. Most adverts feature the VIN which you can use for further research on issues such as whether the vehicle has suffered major damage before. If it is not indicated, you should also try to ask the auto trader to provide it.

Using these simple tips will help you find the best used cars. You will also know if the quoted price indicates a good deal or not. After all, no one wants to make a bad purchase decision even if it is for a used car. Remember, reading used car reviews from sites that provide quality content is advisable since some cars may develop problems as they age. This way you can be sure that the one you target is not one of them.

Action of Bike Games

Action gives an adrenaline rush to many people. Racing along a deserted highway on a bike and feeling the wind whooshing in the ears and accomplishing some death-defying stunts is the dream fantasy of almost every action seeker. However, it is dangerous to carry out the fantasy in real life. The closest one can get to this appealing fantasy is through online games.  Mountain biking, a satisfying way to fulfil one’s quest of stunts and high flying with bikes is coming as a preferred and popular genre of bike or car racing games. Many websites offer such games. On first look, these games appear to be very easy. However, as one progresses, one finds out that every move is based on real physics and laws of motion. As one starts playing, one realises a slight misjudgement leads to loss of points. A building passion towards the game gives the player the adrenaline rush he seeks.

Bike games are very interesting to play because they have many levels of gaming. One is promoted to the next level after crossing the first level successfully. The players go through the unique high of achievement after crossing a level and moving on to the next one. As one plays more, he becomes more skilful. Gaming online is for leisure. In spite of that, with the help of the real sounds and graphics and rigidity of rules, one tends to be more disciplined.

Most games available online these days are free of cost and are based on flash, which makes more of quick techniques available for the players. Players also have a wide range of action-filled bike games from which they can choose.

Moleskine Retro PDA Part6 – Project Pages
General Car Reviews
The Index is constantly added to during the week. (see flickr.com/photos/mrmole/2915490506/in/set-72157606467254…

Every Monday morning I undertake the all important GTD "Weekly Review" (WR) which is 30 minutes to an hour where I do nothing but process my thoughts and tasks for the week. One part of the WR is to process my INBOX and one of the options I have for a task is to move it to its own project. A "project" is something which contains one or more subtasks in order to complete it. I have based this loosely on GTD terms although I normally call projects an actual project that I am undertaking at home or work and then list tasks and break them down within. Here, a task may have many subtasks which in GTD terminology would be another project; which I suppose this all still stands in a way. I have a project (project X say) which contains a number of tasks that need to be completed in order to achieve the goal of the project (which is normally to get all my commitments to the project done and so work out of my way).

One of the tasks may be, for example, to complete a Test Plan document. So I take this from the INBOX (if indeed it started life in there) and move it to the Project X page that I either create or have created. The big thing then and what I believe is what makes a lot of the GTD idea make sense, is that you don’t simply leave it like that. The aim of GTD is to empty your head in order to allow you to actually think about what you are doing instead of it being crammed with what you should be doing or what you will be doing. So to "complete a Test Plan document" is quite a big task and just that itself brings up a lot of questions in your head. How will I start it, what shall I include in it, when shall I put the requirements cross references in, who will peer review it? By putting this one task onto the project you have filled your head up once again with everything and you need to do something about that. So, thinking in a GTD way, you need to ask as soon as you have written that task down "what next?". What needs to be done in order to have that one task complete? If it turns out that all you need to do is that one task then everything is fine, but if you find yourself straight away thinking about how you would approach the task and you have to do x, y and z in order to tick it off the list then you need to split it up, create it into its own sub-project of the main project.

We see then that a true task must be a single item, it must be able to be started and finished without needing anything else. If that is not the case then you must split it up. Everything looks a lot more manageable when split up into small chunks, both in your head and, more importantly as you wish to get things like this out of your head, on paper.

Each task on the project page is written with a dash in the front in the format "- write test plan" for example. There is no real idea behind the dash, it just seemed to evolve with how I write lists, but in fact it makes a good marker and spacer in order to allow further marking up. One such mark would be to put a tick through the dash to show that it has been done. I could have had make this dash into a little box that could be ticked, but dashes make a block of text look more like a list when done in my handwriting!

The project pages are the main home for tasks, taken from mostly the INBOX page and they stay there until complete. There are "one or many" project pages within the Moleskine book, these are grouped into three sections. Each project has at least half a page to itself, if I believe it will be a bigger project then it has its own page. The first pages of projects are "personal" projects, such a finance, home, school, car, diy… just general personal type things that can all be turned into projects in the GTD sense. The next projects are all work related and take up most of the room, it is a sad fact that work takes up a lot of ones life and it is when having things under control pay off the most. The last collection of projects are things I am doing for friends, and scripts that I said I would work on or articles I said I would write for friends and various "free time" groups that I am a member of or help with.

At this point, we still only have a list that has gone from a big big list to a number of sublists on different pages which themselves are split further into smaller sub projects. A future post will explain what happens next, how do you get all this information into something you can handle on a weekly basis?

Japan has been a rich source of used cars for many years and each day thousands of people buy a used car direct from Japanese car auctions.

The benefits are many:

Good quality, reliable, economical and famous Japanese brands such as Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi.
Low milage. Most cars come with less than 100,000 kilometers on the clock
Good condition. Regular servicing and repairs due to strict Japanese Government safety checks.
Many options. Many owners choose several options, so your car will come feature packed.
Cheap! Cars can start at auction for 1 yen, although you’ll probably pay a little more than that!
  And more…

In this article I’ll cover the following points to help you understand the Japanese used car market and make a more informed choice about buying a car for export to your country.

Japanese used car dealers
The buying and importing process

Japanese used car dealers

The process of buying and importing a used car has become much easier with the advent of the internet. There are thousands of dealers throughout Japan and around the world who have websites offering cars they have in stock, or offering a custom car search service where they take your specifications and search the auctions until they find a car to match your exact needs.

There is a wide variety of export car dealers. Some dealers are huge organisations dealing with large volumes of cars while others are single entrepreneurs who run their own businesses. Of course the larger a company the bigger the overheads and so probably you’ll end up paying slightly more in dealer fees, but you get more security from dealing with an established business. The choice between price and reliability is yours.

The Japanese Government recognised JUMVEA (Japanese Used Motor Vehicle Exporters Assosciation) maintains a member list of companies which “was created to address this problem [of poor quality cars and dealers], being composed of used car exporters of excellent credentials and high credibility” JUMVEA website.

Their aim is to give membership to those companies which show their reliability and service over time, so if you are particularly worried about trust then look for a company with this accreditation. You can check the list of members on the JUMVEA website, and accredited members will proudly display their membership on their website.

However not many companies have JUMVEA membership so before buying from a non member do the following checks:

See if the exporters bank details are listed on the website
Call the company at least once to ask about any questions you may have. Bona fide companies will have no problems with talking to you over the phone, although be patient with their English abilty!
  Ask for testimonials
Check the quality of response to your enquiries. If the dealer is obscuring or dodging an issue then move on

In general use your common sense and if something is suspicious or dosent feel right then don’t proceed and find another dealer.

The buying and importing process

Check your country’s law

Before importing check your country’s rules for importing used cars to make sure you are allowed to import the car you want. Most countries have liberal laws and are mostly concerned with emissions and safety standards.

However these can add extra to the cost of importing so make sure you research the compatibility of the model you want with laws in your own country. If you choose a car which is way outside the limits then you could be spending a large amount to make it conform.

Check with the dealer and your local department of motor vehicles if in doubt. You don’t want to be left on the docks with a bill for several thousand to make the car conform before you can take it home!

Sending the request

If the dealer has a stock of cars you can request on shown on their website in which case you will know the price and details of the car.

However if you are looking for something specific then you will have to send the dealer an email describing what you want. Most dealers have some sort of request form on their website.

Confirmation

If you are buying from stock then you will usually get a faster confirmation of purchase. If you request something else then the dealer will have to search for what you requested at an auction and send you details of prices and specifications. It is then up to you to confirm or ask for a different model etc.

Payment

Once you have decided on a car and price you will be required to pay for it. Methods and amounts vary by dealer.

Some dealers require you pay 100% upfront with by bank transfer (or telegraphic transfer T.T.) before the car is bought at auction or readied for shipping. Others require a less amount as a deposit and then a balance on completion of purchase at auction or when the car is ready for shipping.

You may feel nervous sending money to a foreign country and unknown company so you should be sure of the dealers trustworthiness before you enter into a contract or send any money. You can do this by checking to see if the dealer displays a company registration number and address on their website, then ask the Japanese embassy in your country for confirmation – although this may take a long time and cost you extra.

You can also check the bank account. Japanese banking laws are strict when it comes to monetary movements and bank accounts. All registered businesses are required to have their accounts under exactly the same name that they registered their company.

If you are buying a used car online from Japan and the name on the bank account is different from the name of the trading company, or if its an individual, then you should investigate more.

Delivery

Delivery times will vary according to distance and number of ships to your country. Here is a rough guideline.

Russia and Hong Kong: three days
New Zealand and Australia: three weeks
Rest of world: between four to six weeks

There may be other times to include in the delivery period such as a deregisteration certificate for the Japanese owner which shows the car has been sold by him, and finding a space on a boat to your port. These extra processes can take up another four to six weeks.

Arrival

Your car has arrived at your port and now you have to pick it up. Take the documentation which the dealer sent you to a shipping agent who will arrange the offloading of the car from the ship.

Depending on your country’s laws you may have to pay import tax, licence the car, get car safety tests done, and insure the car.

Now your car is legally imported and in your hands. Drive home carefully!

Summary
In conclusion buying and exporting a used Japanese car is fairly straightforward, and can save you a fair bit of money compared to buying a car in your own country. Choosing a reputable firm is probably the biggest priority to ensure a smooth transaction, and you should be aware of any extra costs your government may impose to make the car conform to safety and emission standards.

Choosing a car can be a long, drawn out process that could take months before you finally make a decision on your next purchase. A lot of us will have preferences on brands and models that we may have either learnt to drive in or which friends or family members who have recommended to us. Likewise there are plenty of TV shows and magazines full of car reviews, filling us in on the pros and cons of each car.

One good indicator of a good car is the ‘Car of the Year’ award, an award given to a car that, based on a range of criteria, has been chosen as the best car of the year – typically a model that has been released that year. The award is voted for by motoring journalists so they have the buyer’s interests at heart in their judgements which are based on a number of factors such as:

Design
Obviously how the car looks, but also with modern technology helping improve the features of cars the design is really important these days.

Comfort
You ideally want a car that is comfortable, especially during long trips. A lot of cars now have new comfort perks such as heated seats and almost every adjustment can be made to the seats height, angle and support which all contribute to the comfort level of a car.

Safety
The safety rating of any new car is a vital statistic that drivers, especially parents, will be concerned about. Seatbelts and airbags as well as technological advancements like parking sensors and some models even alert you if you drift out of your lane on the motorway.

Economy
The cost of fuel and motoring in general is a hot topic these days and so you ideally want a car that can really go the distance between visits to the petrol station.

Handling and Performance
Obviously you want a car that performs well and doesn’t have any annoying characteristics such as poor acceleration or steering.

Price
Whilst the price of a great car is subjective, what the criteria that the Car of the Year organisation measure is how well placed a vehicle is, a car that is priced low enough to appeal to many different drivers is going to score well in this category.

Driver Satisfaction
Lastly and most importantly, is the satisfaction of the drive. Does the car drive well? Does it have any annoying features? Is the car prone to breaking down or parts breaking? These are all contributing factors to how satisfying the car is to drive.

2006 Honda Civic Reviews – What Is New?

The 2006 Honda Civic sedan is said to be one the most advanced piece of automotive machinery today. If you’ve been reading all the car reviews and magazines, with all the praises the new 2006 Honda Civics have been getting would lead you to think that it is indeed some kind of engineering break through. The 2006 Honda may not be the most advanced car, but it is the most practical and reliable car for the amount you are paying.

I’ve been driving a Honda Civic for years now, and I have been faithfully loyal to Honda’s lineup. My 1992 Honda Civic has over 200K miles on it, and it has only two problems that required more than a thousand dollars in maintenance. It’s also been in a serious accident, but now it shows signs of its age or experience today. Other than these, this Honda Civic has no other major serious problems. Hondas are generally known for its reliability and robustness. Also, you may be interested in getting one of those cool GPS satellite navigation systems that comes along with the new 2006 Honda Civics.

What else is new with the 2006 Honda Civic that is winning it so much praise? The first thing you will notice is that they gave the car another makeover. Sort of like the makeover they gave the ’92 model, going from the previous box look to the sleeker model, the ’06 model is another leap forward towards a sleeker, futuristic, and dynamic design. The 2006 Honda Civic sedan is much more attractive than the 1992 model.

The 2006 Honda Civics has all gotten a boost to their performance as well. The 2006 Honda sedan now has a 140 horsepower 1.8 liter i-VTEC engine with a Drive-by-Wire Throttle System, giving it more zip than ever. It is also even more fuel efficient than any of the previous Honda, getting an incredible 40 MPG on highways, and 30 MPG in cities. The fuel efficiency alone is a good reason to look into buying a 2006 Honda Civic, but they are also low emission vehicles.

If you have been driving the new 2006 Honda Civic, you will probably be driving this Honda for some time to come. They’ve proven to be extremely reliable, efficient, and fun little cars, and are actually extremely affordable as well. If you are looking for the environmental friendly Honda, you will be happy to check out the Honda Civic Hybrid, an Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV) rating, so you can save on gas while enjoying amenities like the new multi-tiered instrument panel, a sophisticated audio system, and available navigation system.

General Knowledge Of Car Insurance You Should Know

Owning a vehicle has in fact become a necessity of life, and insurance is something that regrettably has to come along with owning a vehicle. It is an issue that most people groan at, nevertheless if you take a bit of your time and put some effort into the process, you in actual fact can be able to find some great deals when it comes to general car insurance.

The very first step to getting car insurance for yourself is to get some quotes. Although you do not need a driver’s abstract in order to get a quote, however you will surely want to know all of the details of your driving history, and having a driver’s abstract just helps make this process a lot easier. Also, it will save you a lot of time and effort because you will by now have all of the driving history information that you need on hand. A driver’s abstract is basically a snapshot of a driver’s history, and which typically contains the driver’s name, license number, class, expiry date, conditions/restrictions, height, date of birth, gender, driver’s convictions, suspensions reinstatements over the past 3 years, as well as the conviction dates, if any, earliest licensed date available, demerit point total and medical due date for commercial drivers.

How To Handle Car Insurance Claims

Many people are nervous about filing car insurance claims because of all of the horror stories they have heard over the years, for instance your premium rate will skyrocket if you ever have to file a claim or that the insurance company will try to do everything in their power not to pay. But if you have chosen a reputable company to do business with, they will do their best to make the car insurance claims process as quick and painless as possible.

The first step in submitting the claim is to know what your policies cover. If you present a claim for an item that is not covered by your policy, the claim will be rejected and you will have to pay those costs out of pocket. You should review your car insurance claims information once in a while to keep yourself up to date in case of an accident.

Remember to exchange information with the other driver involved in the accident. Each party concerned in the accident should get the full name, address, phone number, insurance company, and insurance company’s phone number of the other party. Squiggle down the license plate number of the other car may be a good idea as well. This will assist you identify the other party to your insurance company when filing your claim. It will also help to acquire an accident report from the police to help in the car insurance claims process.

The last step in filing car insurance claims is to contact your insurance company and let them know that you’ve had an accident. A claims adjuster will decide who was at fault and who should be held responsible for the cost of repairing the vehicles.

Why is there a picture of Sarah and Roger Rabbit up there? You’ll see…
Sarah comes back from Spain with a new view of her home country. It comes out , "So, they do that here?"
Her example was that you can afford to go anywhere in Spain due to the public transportation system- unlike here.
This discussion brought up the idea that our country not only does not have a proper system, but the system has been downgraded in a major city in order to sell more cars and busses:

A couple of years ago, the Gurrilla Drive-In had a brilliantly paired program of films for an evening of free, outdoor entertainment:
It started with half of a documentary on how GM officials pretended to be a small company which bought the street car system in Los Angeles, which- at the time- had, … "the best public transportation system in the world !"
The purpose was to destroy public, electric-driven, transportation, so that they could sell more cars and GM busses.
So, the Guerilla Drive-In evening started with this documentary as a lead-in to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", which is both silly, and closely related in subject to the issue at hand. Yes, ‘Roger Rabbit’ is a political film. *

RE: use of photo- This image appeared in Wikipedia, which has text regarding its use as ‘commentary and discussion’, here:

I’d say that this is commentary and discussion (and free advertising) of the movie, as required. If someone with film rights complains, I’ll take it out.

Don’t you wish you had an electric car? One that you could charge up at home or at work for nickels while helping decrease our demand for oil from unstable, unfriendly nations? And not some little golf cart, a regular-sized car that needed almost no maintenance, was perfect for commuting, outperformed most gas-powered cars, and generated none of the pollution that threatens both are personal and planetary health? In 1996, General Motors made such a car, the EV1, and leased it to several hundred drivers who quickly fell in love with it. But in 2006, GM discontinued the EV1, forcibly took them back from drivers, and crushed them into scrap. Why would GM, which is now little more than a bloated corpse, have discontinued a car that would help solve so many pressing problems and was clearly the industry’s future? This is the central question of Chris Paine’s important, informative, excellent documentary, WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR?
